what is Platform Tennis?
Platform Tennis is an American racquet sport enjoyed by thousands of people of all ages. It is the only racquet sport than can be enjoyed outdoors in colder weather. The court is an aluminum deck, lighted for night play, about 1/3 the size of a tennis court, and is enclosed by a 12 ft. high screen that is part of the playing surface. The equipment is an 18” long paddle and the ball is tennis ball-sized, but spongy.
The game was created in New England by tennis and other racquet sport players who did not want to wait all winter to play their other racquet sport. If you enjoy any racquet sport or think you will and are between 8 and 100+ years old, you will find it fun!
Note: "PADDLE TENNIS" is a very similar sport that evolved out of "PLATFORM TENNIS". You will find the terms sometimes used interchangeably. Although some play "Platform" in the warmer weather, "Paddle" was designed for higher temperatures.
to play platform tennis
The platform court is lighted and typically open from October to April during our indoor tennis season. In the summer months, the platform tennis court is used as a basketball court.
Court reservations are available to GFS&T Club members only and generally follow the same rules and guidelines in use by the tennis facility. Guests must be accompanied by a Club member, pay the $5 guest fee, and complete a non-member waiver form prior to play. At the present time there are no court fees. Our Platform Tennis leagues may reserve contract court times for the entire season.
Platform court reservations are booked in yourcourts.com, the Club's online reservation system.
